Fog Lamps not Working

Hi there,

I took my 2005 Jeep wrangler unlimited in for a service and to fix the fog laps (they don't want to turn on and when they do go on they stay on have to remove the fuse to turn off). The mechanic said that the indicator stock (where the switch to turn on the fog lamps is located) needs to be replaced. Does this sound right to everyone? Everything else on the indicator works (light switch, brights, dimmer). I find it odd that the only thing that wouldn't work is fog lamps... Thoughts??

If that's the case does anyone have an indicator stock for sale?

Very well could be the multi task switch located on the left side of ur column. But first try this b/4 either investing in a rip off priced switch or fixing it another way your self.
This is a copy paste of what I put on here about a year ago on this problem
My tj had this problem on the fogs coming on by themself or staying on. This is what I did try it
Your relays are near the battery in a compartment, chk them even if you have to switch one around (just make sure its got the same value as the one thats you think is faulty. Or go to Cdn Tire buy one and try it in the parking lot, so if it doesn't do anything you can bring it back and get yur money returned. If this doesn't correct the problem, it cud be the switch (b/4 doing anything on this - remove the NEG battery cable) wait 30 minutes then proceed, This is to power down the airbag. If you need to know how to get the switch out I can tell you but try the other thing first.

Thanks a ton for your reply. I'm literally taking off the hard top right now to go for a quick cruise...not Canadian Tire. Lol!

Okay, got some fuses and the fog lamps come on and stay on. It's definitely the switch in the indicator stock. Anyone have any lines on a cheap one? :p

One thing u can do if your in doubt of my instructions is go to ur dealer and ask him for a schematic of the wiring for the mult task switch (I got mine FREE) or you can first remove the NEG battery cable hang it up somewhere so it doesn't touch anything metal, wait 30 mins (as above) remove the 4 screws around the column nears the dash (its a covering) the switch is on ur left closest to the door. You will see a orange and white wire, snip this one only... your going to put a new switch on/off mounted somewhere convenient to your dash (I put mine on the left side in the lower part as it was easy to install and replace if i broke it later) the wire isn't going to be long enuff so ur going to have to tap a wire to it.. soldiering is the best and cover it with either electrical tape or the rubber meltie thingie (looks like a rubber tube-u heat and it melts on the wire) so the switch can go inbetween the wires. So now when u want power for ur fogs u will have to turn this switch on first.. everything else will come on as b/4.. I suggest u mount the switch with the off UP and the on DOWN - so if ur knee hits the switch ur fogs won't come on accidentally...and preferably as switch with a metal toggle, plastic breaks easy if the knee hits it..lol

Thanks for your reply mr.white. Don't think I'm quite brave enough to start snipping wires. :). But thank you very much for all the time you put into your replies. I do appreciate the effort!

Re: Fog Lamps not Working

lol you don't have to cut any wires a wire is already broken this is the problem in the multi switch i fixed a bunch of them for people with cars, trucks and vans that have the same switch as our tj's.
it's a design problem where when you put your high beams on it is slowly cuting these two small wires on the back of the switch, look closely to see them. it's cut so close you can't splice it so i used a dremmel tool to make small chanel up the back of the lever about a two centameter to pull the wire out to splice it together.
after i tucked both wires down in the channel i made so it doesn't get pinched again. no problems since.
one wire is for fog lights one is for dimmer
when the fog one breaks the lights stay off or on if they were on when it happened.
when the dimmer wire breaks the dome lights stay on and the dash lights are on full.
i've also had fog lights stay on from a bad relay and corroson inside the fog light
