Axle Swamp
Wonder if the axles from a xj year I believe 91 would swamp into a 03 tj sport. Does the tj have a high or low pinion?? Thats what my question is? I have to measure the length also..there is no abs on the axles or on the 03 tj, so thats one good thing..its stops when the brake is applied. The reason for the possibly swamp is to get 3.73 gearing over the stock 3.07 that are in it now..also will put in a locker at the same time. Any info on this would be appreciated

Re: Axle Swamp
xj axle is high pinion tj low pinion. all brackets are in same place except xj wheel alinementis done at frame brackets.tj have cam bolts at axle.adjustable control arms required for proper front alinement

Re: Axle Swamp
My tj 03 has 3.07 gearing and for offroading this sucks when u want to crawl over rocks also with big tires on the highway I loose my 5th gear always shifting. For street tires its okay. Swamping axles for a lower gear like 3.73 or 4.11 sometimes its cheaper to just change the axles instead of changing the gearing inside the diff's plus sometimes u get a stronger axle too. Having 3.73's or 4.11 or fords 8.8's is great for offroading. Like i did on my 89 cherokee with 3.07's I bot a scrapped Cherokee with 3.73's and changed the axles. But there are things u must find out before doing this some fit and some don't width shud be the same, will the drive shaft still fit or do u need different ones.. u must chk all this plus more b/4 doing this or u may find out its going to cost u big $..u're looking for the cheapest way possible.. asking questions here does help... may be someone has done this on the xj to tj ..

Your doing a SWAP ... trading one set of axles for another. I know what the DIFFERENCE is between a SWAP and a SWAMP.. which is that you are doing?? |
Re: Axle Swamp

Re: Axle Swamp
I feel your pain Mr.White as im doing an axle swap aswell.
its a swamp cause thats most likely the reason for the swap! lol would certainly help! switching gears in the axle is do-able with the proper tools, but is an awful pain. alot of checking and rechecking... not something you just bolt together once and go... but it is the cheaper option if your looking to install a specific locker, or have specific gears which can be difficult to find if you have to find axles that have the control arm mounts like mine do. |
Re: Axle Swamp
Still kicking it around, will still have weak axle. Looking around for a dana44 w/4.10's and locker w/heavy duty axle and could change gears in front axle. Got a quote for this completed job at 2200. I think thats a little steep. He did say he'd put whatever gearing I want 4.10/4.56 nice. Gee'ch I want a good deal. Then comes a friend and says why not put ranger axles under it, strong, 8.8, so everything is shot now..lol Money anyone with a money tree in their back yard?
