Anyone ever had this happen ?

I have a TJ 2003 with a 4L six and about every 4 fills the check engine light comes on and 1 or 2 days later it goes out!
Its new to me and it does not stop the jeep from working right , just drives me nuts as I drive it.

I had 2000 TJ until last summer and i had similar problem. Took it to corner mechanic and he said its oxygen sensor. some cleaning of oil around and problem stopped. Not sure was it really because of that but engine light went away..'

Re: Anyone ever had this happen ?

If you loosen the cap with the motor running it will set a code. if the cap is not sealing it will set a code.

Try replacing your gas cap.

The check engine light comes on for over a thousand reasons,
trying to diagnose it without pulling the codes is foolish at best,
have the engine codes read and post up the numbers here to start...

Yes and the light just went out on its own again 48 hr same as last time and no codes set ????

Re: Anyone ever had this happen ?

Engine error codes are stored in the computer,
even if the check engine light goes out,
please hook up a code reader and see if you can get the error codes.
Do not assume because the check engine light has gone out, everything is fine.

Princess Auto Code Reader,

AutoLink® AL301 OBDII & CAN Code Reader | Princess Auto

listed at $59. they are sometimes on sale for $39.
A very good investment for any jeep owner...

Billy I took your advice picked up a scanner , and my Jeep finally set and keep a code "Po138" (02sensor circuit high Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2) .
Now to look up and find a fix thanks again for your help Randy

Re: Anyone ever had this happen ?

I have the same problem on and off, this week the "engine warning light" has been on all this and last week. I keep a little piece of electrical tape on my dash cut to the size of the light and put it over it when it comes on and remove it again when it goes out. (I know this isn't a remedy for the problem-but I am not wasting money buying another one when the jeep runs okay) Its the same code all the time. As "Oldfart" mentioned about the gas cap make sure its on tight. Too many sensors and its not getting any better. :(

:) love it. why people come on forums with an obvious problem that requires it to seen by tech is beyond me.

Re: Anyone ever had this happen ?

Yes it true it is a tech problem but were I live we have two Jeep dealers in the area and not one that can be trusted to fix a problem right even in 3 attempts and that's for a brake fix cant think how much it would cost for this LOL .
so that's why I ask here, most owners have had this problem and nice to here how it worked out for them then you have Idea what to expect.

Please bear with me as this will be a rather long response,

I had initially posted this

I got a negative props on this, and it irked me to no end,
I had initially thought it was the original poster leaving negative feedback because he did not get the response he was looking for, so I fired off this comment,

Later, it occured to me that anyone for any reason, can leave negative props on ones post, and hide behind this anonymity. This is one of the main reasons I have stop posting on this forum. If possible can a moderator send me a pm with details on who left negative props on my initial post?

I thought I had given good advice, and got slammed by someone, perhaps this is the case, perhaps not, but it left a sour taste in my mouth.

^ Now I see this message on the thread, and I dont really understand it. JeepTech, I understand your predication to try and scare the noobs into not doing any work on their jeep themselves and giving advice, usually in the form of pms to bring their jeep into a dealership for service, much the same as the previous JeepTech (another mechanic at a Jeep dealership).

While this maybe good advice to some, it really does not help the jeep owner that is offroading, halfway up Green's Mountain or partway down the Ardbeg trail. My suggestion for purchasing an OBD reader was to try and make a jeep owner somewhat independant, and allow him the luxury of being somewhat capable of performing a diagnosis on his jeep, giving him a starting point on what to look at in the event that something untimely happens, miles from civilization. I understand that identifying the problem is only the first step, but it sure goes along way, if you know what you are looking for to begin with.

So, JeepTech, how much does your dealership charge for an OBD reading, I know that the dealership near me wants between $100-$200, and this is just to hook up the dealerships reader to diagnose the problem. Please post a reply to this thread and do not send me a pm, i think it would benefit the readers, if they knew in advance this cost vs. buying their own OBD reader.

Continuing on,

Randy,
I am glad you took my advice and purchased a reader,
I have had the exact same problem P0138 code thrown.

My remedy was to clean the contacts of the O2 sensor, it is the one nearest the passenger fenderwell, let me know if you can find it, if not i can post a picture.
I cleaned the contacts to the sensor, erased the error code, and have not had the problem return in 2 years.

To remove the error code, turn the jeep key on, but do not start the jeep, follow promps on the OBD reader to erase the error code.

Here is a website with a list of error codes, there are many locations on the web for this, a google search will yield many results,
