Any tips to protect from rust?

Hi pals,

Since the winter is on its way, I want to save my TJ from the salty snow. I can see the rust is started to eat the underneath parts of my TJ. I am not an expert on vehicles. I don’t know the correct terminologies for those mechanical parts. What can I do to stop the rust from eating the metal? Provide me any simple(home-doable) methods.

Also I can see some rusts developing here and there on the outer body. So I went to a local garage to get a quotation to fix. He told me it will cost me approximately $1000 to repaint the whole body. Since my TJ’99 is already old, do you think its worth repainting? Other than the “rust” problem I love my Jeep.

Thanx in advance

i get my truck krown protected every year.. its like an oil spray but way better
they do every part of your car and it lubes everything... cars are about 110 trucks under 150.

or you can get one of those electrified ones... or put it in the garage which is what im doing as soon as my samurai is done!

Wire brush all the crap off your frame, and spray everything thoroughly with a penetrating rust inhibitor. I did mine with 3 or 4 aerosol cans and it held up really well. It cost me about $30 and took a couple of hours.
It's a dirty job but a good opportunity to check out everything underneath the Jeep.
I need to do it again soon before winter sets in.

BIG T the WORST thing you can do is put it in the garage in terms or salt if your driving it daily leave it out side when the salt is frozen its dorment, by putting it in even a non heated garage it will melt
krown is good but it will destroy your rubbers
the best thing for rust prevention is paint PERIOD if it is alread ystarting to rust POR 15 is a great paint but it wont stick over already painted surfaces or bare metal worth a damn it is desgined to go over rust and it does the best at that at will stop rust in its tracks... if you cant paint the entire under belly then undercoating is your only answer the best is actualy motor oil and unless your doing it yourself i highly doubt you ill find someone doing it, next best is a dripless system that most are using now, unlike krown it is more wax based and wont hurt your rubbers, now dont get me rong krown works and works very well but all your busshing ball joints tie rods etc rubbers will pay the price
being 28 and having been in a very large body shop for 14 years of my life i have learned a few things about rust in southern ontario lol

ill keep an eye on my rubbers lol

yeah this year she will be outside atleast until my suzuk is done then it would be stored for the winter...

krown doesnt really drip and they make sure to do everywhere inside and out which is good..

i found that rustoleum sticks to rusty metal great and seems to stop the rust from growing.. i did my old gold 4runner like 5 years ago and the rust hasnt grown since then in the spots...

if your car is new and you go to krown they will warrenty it for life and they lock in your price.

i got a free can of there juice and it works as good as thrust for stubborn bolts...

only way to really protect it is a tootal frame off.. unless your just worried about the body then you still should take the body apart because rust gets into some crazy places..

Couldn't agree more.
Nothing is worse than a damp garage for promoting rust.

I scrape and brush all the loose crap off my frame and spray everything with a penetrating & moisture displacing protectant every year.
