YJ Flat Fenders

Hey folks I was wondering if anyone has done the "Flat Fender" mod to
their YJ?
http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/body/flatfender_yj/
http://www.jeepaholics.com/rides/view.asp?id=1523

A local body shop said they would paint my ride in the $900 to $1100
range if I stripped it of all hardware so I spent 2 days replacing all
the hinges and hood hardware to stainless so the bolts where all
freed. I was looking at the front fenders and the beating that they
take from rocks chips etc. and I thought it would be a shame to get it
painted just to have them fender leading edge get chipped up again and
thought the flat fender would reduce the impact area. Also I was
looking at going with different flares so I can get rid of the factory
plastic step which I hate the looks of.....any suggestions on what
flares I should look at getting?

TIA

There's several ways to do this with a jigsaw, but there are better ways.
Here's a link to Poison Spyder's extremely cool Tube Fenders.

http://www.spydercustoms.com/index2.php

I've seen several custom YJs done in similar fashion and they look tough as
nails. I just spoke to Poison Spyder today, their entire stock of the type
pictured are all sold. However they should have some by mid June, with the
3" wider version shipping in mid-July.

Here's another brand, Rev1, Avalanche told me about, I'm not too nuts about
the design, but it gives you another option.

I plan on doing this next winter.
