XJ TPS life span

How long should a TPS last on a '01 XJ? I ask only because I'm going on my
second one in about a year now. Started to shift at odd times and the check
engine light came on, so I took it to the dealer.

Looked at my mountain of paperwork on the Jeep and found out I had this same
sensor replaced a little over a year ago. I know they should last longer
then a year, but I just though I'd ask.

Any ideas as to what might be killing it? I've gone through a few puddles on
road, nothing very deep, but splash up a lot of water. Other then that, I
can't think of anything that would be killing this sensor.

TIA

Hank

I have a '95 YJ with 60,000 miles and the original TPS. It is not a part
that wears out by any mechanism I know of.

Well these are electrical parts, so exposure to moisture, excessive
vibration, excessive heat, mechanic dropping it on the floor prior to
installation, who knows?

Re: XJ TPS life span

Our 88 has almost 300K km on it on the original TPS.

I have had the TPS die twice on me in the last 3 years and yes we do off
road it, so it sees muddy water.

On recommendations from folks here, I decided to clean it before
shelling out money. I started with the easy clean and did the
electrical plug with contact cleaner first.

That lasted over 2 years until earlier this year when it went 'bad'
again on an off road run. I used WD40 on the plug again and away it
went.

Re: XJ TPS life span

Thanks for the info. Next time I'll just try cleaning it first before I have
them put in a new one.

When yours went bad, did just the check engine light come on, or did you
start to have problems with the Jeep shifting too?
