XJ alternator - Died in the mud
 

Saturday I spent a day in the mud...real mud, top of tire mud. Anyway, after
the 2 hour cleanup I started her up and watched the alternator guage drop to
flat line. I figured I must have gotten everything a little too wet. I left
it in the garage overnight, hoping things would get better as it dryed out.
The next day I jumped it and the charging meter read 14V. Great. Untill I
removed the jumper cables. The guage then slowly (over a couple minutes)
dropped down to zero again and I was dead again. Any ideas?

Try a NEW alternator v-belt. the mud just shines up the belt to
the point of no return. With the engine off, you should not be
able to turn the alternator pulley by hand.

You might want to try a can of WD-40 to attempt to get the
remaining moisture out of the alternator.

If both those fail, time for a rebuild. I get a GM kit that has
the beaings, brushes, and voltage regulator for $14.

I would be checking the belt first as Roy mentioned.

You can also open it and clean it. Mud can seize the brushes up. WD40
works great for this.
