What is this part?

On my 83 CJ7 I6 258, there is an aluminum hose which is running from the
bottom of my air filter housing down to what looks like the exhaust manifold
(can't see clearly yet).

Does anyone know what this is for? Function? Also, what is it called?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: What is this part?

Heat riser tube, intake air is drawn from the exhaust area until
engine warms up.

Re: What is this part?

If this part was disconnected, would it cause the engine to run poorly?
What issues/characteristics would happen if this tube was disconnected?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: What is this part?

It just helps your engine warm up faster and prevents carb icing in high
humidity.

Re: What is this part?

Hi Bill,
If you live in a warm climate like I, your engine run much better
and get better gas mileage withOUT the expanded air, but it's a part of
what the SMOG nazis look for in their biannual inspection:
http://www.----------.com/smog.jpg listed as "thermostatic Air Cleaner."
