what msd box should i put on my cj7?
I just installed a Weber k-551 carb on my 86 cj7 with a 258 and now I am
looking to put a msd box on it. the jeep has a rebuilt motor with a cam that lowers max hp down to 2800 rpms, all the emissions removed, and the weber carb. should I go with a msd 6t or the offroad box. I will be street driving it mostly and be doing some off roading but nothing where I will be sinking it in mud up to the doors or driving off cliffs. carmine |

All of the boxes work exactly the same below 6000 RPM anyway. One of the things that MSD adds to the circle track and off road kits are simply 4 little rubber washers that go between the ignition box and the mounting surface. You can add this to the MSD5 as well. For your best advice though, I would call them to see which one they recommend, and why. I think with your application the MSD5 would serve just fine. Hey, before you jump on an "MSD box", consider replacing your ignition
system with an integrated distributor, like the DUI. After becoming totally exasperated with the Prestolite distributor/module on my '76 CJ5 resto project I installed a DUI from 4wd Hdw and the thing runs like a top. Everything is integrated into the distributor, all you do is hook up the + wire from the ign sw. FWIW, I've also installed a K551 Weber kit on this Jeep (232), using a 2 barrel manifold from a 258. It simply runs like a top now, rather than sputtering, wheezing, stalling, choke sticking, etc. I've had it to 12k ft elevation on our passes around here and it never misses a beat. Fuel mileage averages around 18.
