What engines fit?
I've seen links on here before (probably from Bill) and after going through
Bill's links I found a few relevant links but most have to do with engine swaps into YJ's and not CJ's. I want to hunt for an engine for my '85 CJ7 (2.5L 5spd) over the summer and try and do a full swap with a 4.0+ 6cyl with fuel injection over the next winter. However, I'm unsure exactly what engine/tranny/injection sets will fit into my CJ without too much hassle. I've heard I can get a '91+ YJ 4.0L into there with some minor issues (bell housing adapters, etc) and I've also heard some people have done various swaps of Ford/Chevy engines as well as a few XJ's but I've been unable to find any really helpful links as to exactly what vehicles I should be searching for to do this. I plan to visit the wreckers in a few weeks and would like to have a list of what is feasable and what isn't. Thanks! |

Given enough money, nearly anything will fit. A 4.0 swap into a CJ-7 is relatively simple. Use a 94+ with factory fuel injection. A V-8/auto from a Grand Cherokee is also relatively simple, just be sure to get the engine/transmission/computer and complete harness. The hardest part is getting your transplant certified by the Smog Nazis, particularly in California. |

Yes, but it's hard to find an installer that'll risk his license
when he sees your later model engine doesn't have air injection and the vehicle year calls for it.
