Welding Question
I'm buying a used pair of nerf bars for my 83CJ. ..this is over the
internet. "IF" for some unseen reason there are no holes to match up on the frame...is welding an option or would you drill new holes? I hate to weaking the frame by drilling...but not sure if welding on to a rusty frame is a good idea. Not to say the frame is ready to fall apart even in the next 5 years...it's fairly solid...possibly average for an 83..maybe a bit better. So what would you guys suggest?? Allen |
Re: Welding Question
i like the welding option, but if youre going to weld it you first need to
relieve the stress off the frame by using multiple jack stands along the frame rail. people weld them on every day without doing that, but if im going to weld it im going to do it right. if done properly the bars can strengthen your frame. if done improperly, they can weaken it worse than drilling a few holes can. -- Nathan W. Re: Welding Question
IMO... You would do more damage to the frame by welding on it. Drill and
bolt on if possible. -- JimG 80' CJ-7 258 CID 35" BFG MT on 15x10 Centerlines D44 Rear, Dana 30 Front. Re: Welding Question
Hi Nathan,
I was never sure why, but I have always been told not to weld on the frame. I thought it had something to do with it being hardened steel and the heat would jeopardize it's integrity. Maybe someone like you can do it without damage, but the average hobby welder could not.
