viscous coupler
 

I've got a 94 Grand Cherokee and have been hearing a thumping noise
when turning after driving for a few miles. Took it in to the Jeep
dealer, and he says that there is something wrong with the 'viscous
coupler' or some such thing. He says that it will run about $1500 to
fix the problem, but that it is not a safety issue if I don't want to
fix it.

Is this going to keep getting worse and require fixing? I just can't
see putting that much more money into this jeep at this point.

Agreed, but is it possible to change the fluid in this thing? Does it take
anti-slip additive?

Luxury cars, expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, even the older ones.

Where is the thump coming from? I had several instances where a
thump could be felt when turning.. Turned out the U bracket holding the
front anti-sway bar was broken. They break right at the 90deg bend.
I found it after jacking up the front end and noticing the axle was
not sitting even.

Another cause (but usually associated with breaking/accelerating)
is loose control arm bolts. Those will make a pop-pop-pop-pop style
noise.

I didn't suggest the regular maintenance because I felt the
Stealership would have suggested that before the all out 1500 rebuild.

In AMCO transmission advertising I hear, "over half the people who
come in don't need a transmission," and I'm thinking yup, because you've
already rebuilt that one.
