The 318" was used between '57 and '67 to be exact. The distributor
and pump are driven off the rear of the cam, just like the Chevys:
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/318.html It's a very good engine, just too
small.

Well, there's two versions of the 318. The '57 to '67 version is based
(I think) on the Plymouth Polyspherical V8 of the 1950s and early 1960s.

It is substantially different from the one used after 1967, which is a
bored out 273 of 1964, known far and wide as the small block Mopar. This
273 (A block ?) was the basis of the post 1967 318, 340 and 360, and is
the engine on which the modern 5.7 in the Grand Cherokee and other
Chrysler trucks is based.

It was used in millions of Darts, Valiants, Volares, Aspens, Polaras,
Monacos, Furys, LeBarons, 5th Avenues, and the rest of Chrysler's later
rear wheel drive cars. It is indeed a good engine, equivolent in most
ways to the Small Block Chevy.

Does that make sense Bill?

Re: V8 5,2L Engine on Grand Cherokee '97

I'm not sure. You've got the 318" came along first and was
destroked 273. the 326" which you didn't mention is a completely
different block along the other early blocks, that look much larger.
Don't let the reversal of the chart's bore and stroke fool you. And
remember the 360" used the Cherokee Wagoneers is AMC. And the site's not
mentioning their completely different 383" 426" and 440".
