Ut Oh.....No fwd!!! Help me please!

Went to put my 93 4.0(manual) Sahara into fwd high, and a horrible
clicking noise came from under the drivers seat when I started
applying the gas. Sounds like it is at the Tcase(NP231). I was on flat
soft mud with little resistance. I tryed reverse, same thing. When in
gear the Jeep would drive, but the clicking told me to stop and put it
back in 2wd. Runs and shifts normally in 2 wheel high. Where do I
start with this one without putting it in the shop? Any help would be
greatly appreciated, snow is on it's way here in the NE.

Re: Ut Oh.....No fwd!!! Help me please!

"clicking" or "thumping"? I once had a horrible thumping noise coming
from under my `79 CJ-5, and only in 4WD. It turned out that the rubber
mount under the transmission had given up and was allowing everthing to
slide to the right under torque. When that would happen with 4WD engaged
the front universal yoke would hit the floor pan. An easy check: Put
your foot on the rear output shaft of the transfer case and give it a good
solid shove. Try the other side too. If it moves, there's your problem.

If not, grab the front drive shaft, twist and wiggle it every which way.
You'll probably find that you've eaten a U-joint.

My test for U-joints. Take 2 large channel-lock pliers, grab shaft and yoke
on both sides of joint, try to twist it. There should be no movement at all.
I can't feel a slightly worn joint with my bare hands, and I would rather
replace a marginal part than be stranded by it.
