U-haul won't rent to Explorer users

I saw this item in the news tonight that I thought might be of passing
interest to some readers here. For some time now, U-Haul has been
refusing to rent trailers to people who plan to tow them behind soft top
equipped Jeeps. Now they are targeting the Ford Explorer:

Hi Dell
I saw it on television. I think it's unfair to blame the Ford
Explore for their incompetent driver's driving to fast for conditions,
on a poorly made Firestone tires. combined with a door jam sticker that
indicated too low a tire pressure for a high center of gravity vehicle.
But the courts have set precedents, so an accident involving U-Haul
could drag them into it as another deep pockets. We live in a litigious
society.

UHaul is already fighting a suit where an Exploder pulling a trailer blew a
tire. I think UHaul should be suing somebody for the damaged trailer.

Yeah, and in the television story, with typical concern for
facts, the Ford Exploder shown was the new version that comes
with Michelin tires, or at least all the local dealer ones do.

Now if U*Hell would show similar concern for the customers that
rent U*Hell trucks....

Re: U-haul won't rent to Explorer users

I knew some people that had U-Haul hook up a 4x4 to another 4x4 and it was
improperly hooked up causing an accident where both vehicles rolled and that
killed one person and injured another. This was possibly 5-7 years ago.
I think U-Haul was sued and possibly lost the case. (I am not sure if one
of them was an Explorer though)
And NO this was not an urban legend!

u-hell has had a policy against renting to any soft top vehicle owner for a
long time. their "hookup" catalogue has a warning to dealers on every page
that lists a soft top available vehicle. The dealer manual cites inadequate
rollover protection as the reason. It seems that in their opinion the 26
gauge sheetmetal of a KIA roof is going to fare better in a rollover than
any bar equipped vehicle. Who knows where their logic comes from...
besides, have you ever rented any of their junk and not had it be total
rubbish? I think they use the 10% rule... if 10% of the lights come on, it
fine.

long time. their "hookup" catalogue has a warning to dealers on every page
that lists a soft top available vehicle. The dealer manual cites inadequate
rollover protection as the reason. It seems that in their opinion the 26
gauge sheetmetal of a KIA roof is going to fare better in a rollover than
any bar equipped vehicle. Who knows where their logic comes from...
besides, have you ever rented any of their junk and not had it be total
rubbish? I think they use the 10% rule... if 10% of the lights come on, it
fine.
