Tranny woes???

I posted a while back about the clutch engaging 1/2 inch off the floor. Now
I noticed something funny today...at times it's very difficult to get into
first and second. You have to almost jam the damn shifter into gear. It's a
5 speed (83 CJ7) and a YJ tub..not sure if that has anything to do with it.
New sycros or just an adjustment here?
Thanks!
Allen

Sounds like the clutch isn't releasing properly, so the gears
will sound like a cheap coffee mill. Did you ever fix the
original problem such that the clutch engages a bit higher
off the floor?

Man, adjust it!

Maybe/likely you have a dead engine or tranny mount that has shifted
things so the mechanical linkage is going off on you.

I would look for that hard.

If the clutch is worn, it engages at the top of the pedal, not the
bottom, the bottom means a shifted tub or a shifted engine or a loose
lock nut on the adjuster bolt that is right there on the side of the
tranny on the drivers side.....

The pedal is supposed to have 1/2" of free play at the top before the
linkage comes up tight.

If you can't adjust it any more out so the pedal comes up and have a
1/2" of free play at the top, then your throw out bearing or the fingers
on the clutch pressure plate have worn out.

That happened to me a year after a new clutch. The tranny nose cone had
a ding in it that grabbed the throw out bearing and held it on the
pressure plate burning out all the fingers.

Adjust it first, it is a really easy job, there is a big long hex bolt
with a lock nut just where it goes to the tranny clutch fork.

Re: Tranny woes???

Hi Allen,
My guess, like yours is the clutch is not disengaging, take to a
mechanic, because the syncros won't last long being jammed into gear.
