Tranny ID
I'm trying to ID an auto tranny I have. I know Jeep used the Chrysler 904
and the 999 in their 80's era CJ's. Does anyone know how to tell the two apart? The 904's were used behind the 4cyl and the 999 behind the 6cyl engines. It's my understanding that the cases are exactly the same, just the internals are different. Any ideas? I'm sure the part numbers that are stamped into the side will decode, but I've got no reference to decode them. Thanks, Tim in Lowell, MA |

I believe the 4 banger one uses a cable for the kick down and the 6 uses

I believe the 4 banger one uses a cable for the kick down and the 6 uses

All I've got is a bare transmission -- no cables or levers came with it...
The date code suggests it was built in Oct '82 which sounds about right. I was told it came from a Scrambler with a 258, but I can see a casting that says 904-2. Since the cases for the two transmissions are the same, I wonder if they would bother with two different castings just to change the number. I've got conflicting info, namely that it came off of a six cylinder, but the casting in the case says 904-2. Any other ideas, other than tearing it apart?
