TJ speedometer

My TJ speedometer just started acting up... works good to about 40 mph, then
it just bounces plus/minus 5 mph and never goes over 45-50 when I know I'm
doing 70. I put a new gear in about 1 year ago to correct for tires/gears.

Re: TJ speedometer

The speedometer gear housing was probably not rotated enough to get the
speedometer gear to mesh completely with the pinion gear that drives it.
I'd pull the gear to check its condition and if it's ok, reinstall it
and make sure to rotate the housing so the gear is fully engaged. Be
sure to match the speedo gear's tooth count with the index mark on the
housing.

Re: TJ speedometer

You failed to mesh the teeth on the gears correctly (fully). Now, the teeth
are showing signes of being stripped. You _might_ be able to save the gears
by crawling back under your TJ and adjusting the mesh again.
