TJ guages don't work
 

I have a 97 TJ, 4cyl. Just recently the interior lights stopped
working. I checked the bulbs and they were OK. While I had one out I
put a volt meter on it and just barely got 1v. Scratched my head and
put everything back. The next day, not only are those lights out, but
the radio is out, the guages don't work, and the key-in-the-ignition
buzzer is out. First I opened up the dash, pulled the instrument
cluster and cleaned the connections back there - still no help. I
looked at the fuse block and could only locate the one for the radio.
It was OK and had 12v on it. I checked the ground I added for the radio
and it was OK.

The radio is the only part that in this equation that is not stock. I
plan on pulling it tonight and working backwards towards the fuse block.

In the mean-time, has anyone else had this experience before?

It's got to be the instrument connection you worked on, do it
again: http://www.jeepmadness.com/guages.htm Maybe you can find a weak
point in the circuit board near the socket.

There is a TSB for a bad connection...this may be the right solution:

The service manual from the dealer will have better wiring diagrams.

My last haynes manual was a bit light on details.

The service manual from the dealer will have better wiring diagrams.

Problem solved.

Most everything came back when I re-seated the large wire connectors
on the large wire connector block located under the dash to the left
of the steering wheel. But still had no instrument guages, radio,
buzzers, or interior lights. Tipped to the other fuse block next to
the battery, I found a 5 amp fuse blown. Replaced it and everything
is OK.

But this brings up new questions. How come at first the interior
lights went out but the radio, buzzer, and guages all worked fine? In
the interior fuse block, the radio is hooked to a 10 amp fuse, but
this 5 amp fuse in the exterior fuse block is in front of it. But the
most bewildering is that there was a 5 amp fuse there at all. When I
looked at the diagram on the inside of the fuse block cover, it states
that the fuse should be a 10 amp. I've had this Jeep 6 years and this
is the first time that I've been in that box.

Oh well. At least its working again.

My 99 continues to have dash electrical problems. I had the speedo/air bag
problem a while back and took the dash off and clean the terms and gave it some
WD40 mist and reseated everything and it all has worked okay since. But now I
got problems with my turn signals, radio and w/s wipers. I read another
message and switched the radio back to the factory unit and bingo, everything
came back on and work - for a week - now the radio, turn sigs and w/s wipers
are dead again. I have gone through all the fuses and relays. Does anybody
know what I should be looking for for the ground for the dash? There's a
ground hookup on the driver's side into the body with a sheet metal screw
holding two wires. I re-did that but can that be the ground for the dashboard?
I'm thinking I got a ground problem here. Anybody?
