tires verses gears
i have a 1995 wrangler with a 4 cylinder engine. it has 33 inch tires.
would it be better to drop to 31 inch rather than switch to 4.88 gears? i do no do much off roading just some trails |
Re: tires verses gears
Are you having issues?
I have the tall 3.31 gears in my CJ7 with it's 6 cylinder and 33" tires. In my case I 'can' use 5th gear on the highway as far as engine power goes, but it then revs too slow so the engine lugs and it just drinks gas. If I forget about having the 5th gear or overdrive as it is properly called, then my rpm stay about 2300 on the highway or in the 'sweet spot' for power and my mileage stays over 20 mpg, usually about 23 mpg. As far as off road goes, I can count on one hand the number of times I have 'needed' 1st low gear in the last ten years and even then it was plenty low for the need. I normally start off in 2nd low and cruise in 3rd low off road. Re: tires verses gears
If you feel you do not need the 33's the 31's may be better for you.
All things being equal, smaller tires put less strain on the drivetrain and it will be less likely to break. The Dana 35c in particular is a weakness of the YJs. j wrote: > i have a 1995 wrangler with a 4 cylinder engine. it has 33 inch tires. > would it be better to drop to 31 inch rather than switch to 4.88 > gears? i do no do much off roading just some trails |

Wish I had one. Then the 33īs may be fine for you unless you are
having other problems with them. j wrote: > oops gat a ford 8.8 in the rear > nrs wrote: > > If you feel you do not need the 33's the 31's may be better for you. > > All things being equal, smaller tires put less strain on the drivetrain > > and it will be less likely to break. Re: tires verses gears
All things being equal, I'd go with the smaller tire if you don't really
need it. Of course, I just slapped on 35's and only need them to correct a mistakenly low gearing. Now, I'm even more frustrated with unsat braking. Now, I'm even more frustrated with unsat braking. I would think that putting larger tires on and lowering the rear gearing would put a tremendous amount of stress on the axles. I have stock 30" tires and 3.73 gearing, and something tells me that the engineers matched axle torque capacity accordingly. 35's are huge! I'd bet that thing's a handful in heavy winds or when trying to brake it down. |

35's with 456 gears are perfect in My rig :)

Re: tires verses gears
My first gear's 5.56:1... The brakes are 11" drums all around and, while
I could live in traffic starting in 2nd, my Jeep's relatively heavy and the shoes are almost worthless:( Looking at a set of axles to swap, though. Maybe Bill, Mike and some of the other "old timers" on the group will get some relief from my annual posts about crappy brakes:) Hoping to Pass the Torch, Drink "Jeeper" <abc@123.com> wrote in message news:eQI9h.6152$yf7.1516@newssvr21.news.prodigy.ne t... > 35's with 456 gears are perfect in My rig :) > > -- > > "Outatime" <WhoKnows@here.com> wrote in message > news:npqdnT6gy7MG1_rYnZ2dnUVZ_uydnZ2d@softcom.net. .. >> James Drinkwater wrote: >> >>> All things being equal, I'd go with the smaller tire if you don't >>> really need it.
