thinking on adding a second XJ
Me and wifey have been tinkering with the idea of adding a second XJ to our
fleet, I was wondering if anyone here might have some insight on what I should beware of on an '88 2 door, 4.0, 5sp. ? I only talked to the current owner over the phone and here's what he said 5sp, newer clutch and slave cylinder, newer u-joints, lower end done about 4yrs ago, top done about 2 years ago (he will look and try to find the receipts) Aside from the general body problems (floor, rockers etc.) anything specific about a 5sp I should know? TIA Snow... |

Ours runs well.

Re: thinking on adding a second XJ
That '88 XJ has the Peugeot BA-10 5-speed trans. Considered light duty
and a breakage risk if you wheel it. Look for a 1989+ 4.0L with the stronger Aisin AX-15. Some here will tell you it is still weak (it certainly ain't no NV4500), but my AX-15 has 280,000 km on it and I pound it hard. At various times I've snapped u-joints, twisted a shaft, and broke a rear end, but the transmission held up. Another early XJ annoyance is the closed cooling system with the plastic pressure bottle. You can upgrade or look for later model with the open system (1992+). Has it got a Dana 44 rear? That would be a bonus.
