Superwinch = junk

I recently bought a Superwinch 4500 from the quadratec catalog for a
new TJ. The TJ in question is a more or less stock SE, so it's not
super-capable off road and I expected the winch would see a fair
amount of use. Well with the recent rain we've had it didn't take me
too long to get the SE sunk up to its axles in mud. No problem, I'll
just use the winch to pull me the rest of the way up the hill, right?

Fat chance. The so-called "4500 pound winch" balked at even pulling
my ~2700 lb TJ one inch. What a piece of junk! Hopefully I can get
the store to take it back and give me a different brand. I had heard
before tat I should have bought a Warn, but I tried to save a few
bucks. I guess you get what you pay for!

Re: Superwinch = junk

It has nothing to do with Superwinch. You bought a winch that was too
small, and you got too stuck. In mud, that 2700 lb Jeep (which is more
likely a 3500 lb Jeep) is now a 6000 lb Jeep. Most folks get an 8000 lb
or more winch and still show some strain in deep mud. Don't blame the
hardware when you use the wrong hardware.

Re: Superwinch = junk

I'm not personally familiar with the Superwinch brand's good and bad points,
but I would say that your problem wasn't with the winch; at least not the
quality of it. You can't expect *anyone's* 4500 lb. winch to pull a TJ out
of axle-deep mud! 8000-10000 lb. winches would probably have been able to
do it, but would have had to work pretty hard at it. Not only do you have
the suction of the mud on the tires (as well as the axles and skid plates),
but you're trying to pull the jeep up an almost vertical leading edge! Your
4500 lb. winch might have pulled an ATV out of the mud, but it was grossly
undersized for a TJ. It's not Superwinch's fault.

I got my Cherokee bumper deep on one side in a mud puddle Friday and the
TJ behind me with a Warn 9000 lb winch had a hard time dragging me out.

You also have to realize the rated pull is on the second row of windings
with the cable all the way out, not with only 10 or 20 feet of line out.

I have stalled my Warn 9000 with only a short pull. Had to back up a
ways to get more line out to have more pulling power.

Re: Superwinch = junk

A snatch block may of been a good option for Joshua when he was stuck.
Winch was underpowered but a pulley would of given him double the pulling
power and/or could of been used to help pull from a different direction or
angle. Not the first choice, but a snatch block does open options that all
sound better than walking home through knee deep mud.
