Starting problems
This problem has got worse over the last year. The started will sometimes
(most times now) just spin without turning the motor. I took the starter off and tested it on the bench and it appears to be fine. After removing the inspection plate I can see one place where a couple of the teeth are broke off. Questions: 1 - Is there a gear in the starter that could be worn out - the spindle spins free until the solenoid shoves it forward. 2 - Can the ring gear on the fly-wheel be changed, or does the whole fly-wheel have to be replaced. -- JimG 80' CJ-7 258 CID 35" BFG MT on 15x10 Centerlines D44 Rear, Dana 30 Front. Re: Starting problems
OK - hold on the spindle only spins free in one direction either position...

This is the doohickey that shoves that pinion gear out and into good contact with the ring gear. If it fails, it will usually take out one or more spots on the ring gear in the process. OK, I guess you might have just a bad ring gear, but never seen one break a tooth without help from a bad bendix. -- Still a Raiders fan, but no longer sure why. |
