You ever seen the country between El Paso and Idaho? That's one big
passel of nowhere desert, especially if you swing west and run up thru
Salt Lake City. Of course, about any direction out of El Paso is a
whole passel of nowhere...

Yup. Used to commute that route about once a year or so. Well,
more accurately from White Sands and continue up past Idaho on
93 into Kalispell Montana. 'Course this was before the easy
route of I-25 up thru into Wyoming and then over left on 90.

South isn't.

Not really desert, more high plateau desert, big sandstone
formations, then lovely mountain canyons with and without
water.

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I've made a bunch of runs down to
Chiuahua - the city - and other than a few strays and one Pemex
station it's pretty barren. One trip through a desert is pretty, the
subsequent trips get boring in a hurry.

Deserts aren't necessarily wind blown sand dunes - the Chiuahua desert
is a pretty definitive region that starts way down in Mexico and
stretches north into Southern Colorado, East to include the Davis
mountains and West as far as the eye can see. That whole part of the
world can quickly kill the unprepared traveler.
