Shifter, Clutch or Tranny problem?
 

One day last week I couldn't shift into 1st gear while driving. I tried to
let up on the clutch a couple of times, which sometimes worked. I then
tried starting in another gear 2nd or 3rd with the same result. This
happened the last 10 minutes of a 45 minute drive though some mild hilly
roads. It only happened then and hasn't happened since.

I checked the little clutch reservoir (with brake fluid) but its level was
OK.

Can anyone tell me what and why?
