Safe cruising RPM for 304 V8?

Just curious. I drive my Jeep to work and do 65-70 mph on the way in.
31" tires, not sure of the gearing in the differentials yet (gonna
look this weekend), 3 speed, 304. I'm really only guessing at my
speed right now because the speedo acts crazy...like it works at first
but then it sort of "slows down"...but not always. Just bizarre. I
have a problem with the connection at the xfer case end that I haven't
gotten around to fixing yet. Anyway, assuming my tach is working
correctly, what would you guys consider to be a "safe" crusing RPM for
my 304? 2000 RPM? 2500 RPM? 3000 RPM? I appear to be (if I can
trust the aftermarket gauge) running around 190 degrees but have seen
it climb to as high as 205 on the 3 1/2 hour trip home the day I
bought it. Thanks for your input.

Hi Travis,
Ideally, IMHO a Jeep's cruising RPM should be about 2500. SMOG cars
usually are at about two grand, but I'm usually geared like a Hot Rod,
and my engines are turning between three and four grand at sixty miles
an hour, so I'm really screaming traveling at traffic speed.
