A friend's father knowing how much he liked his Dad's service
weapon, had it rebuilt and blued, before giving it to him:

Bill,

A M1911A1 is a nice heirloom indeed.

A few of my old shotguns belonged to my granddad many years ago. Not worth
much in money (mostly old Winchester model 37s), but I'll never trade them.
I see them as worth more than any material item in the world since he gave
them to me, which my two boys or grandkids will get one day.

Hi Terry,
That reminds me my Grandfather gave me a couple of old antique
rolled steel shotguns, at too young an age to appreciate them, he remove
the firing pins, and we used them as toys, too bad, this is all I have
