Rear Kick After Auto Tranny Changes Gear

Hi all,
I have a 1996 V-8 Limited that gives a strong kick in the back after
changing from one of the low gears. It's strong enough to shake the
vehicle and certainly audible enough to hear.
I checked the u-joints and they seemed fine, but frankly. Could it be
anything in the differential? I also have a strong feeling that a
friend of mine screwed up the 4WD while joy riding when he should have
taken the Jeep home from the airport like I told him to do.
Regards,
