So you think the fuel pump's the problem? Can banging the fuel tank
alleviate other defective components, or is it most likely the pump?

Kinda like banging a flashlight to make it work. Some of the YJs
had a problem with a disconnected ground after the Stealership worked a
recall, it's something to think about. But more than likely you have
about hundred and half thousand miles on her, it's time for a pump.
