Woah now, hook that wire to ground and you will likely explode your
battery or at least have some wicked pyrotechnics going on!

The battery negative either goes to the fender and/or the engine block.
If it only goes to the engine block, then the engine has a mesh strap
from the back of the head to the firewall. This mesh strap likes to rot
or get corroded ends on it. This is the gauge ground.

The fuel sender ground is a mesh strap that goes across one of the
engine mounts from the engine to the frame and is about 1" wide.
