Cool toys!!!
Sounds like a great job for you, long hours, but I assume the pay is decent. 6-10's
doesnt leave you time for much at all, much less jeeping. glad to hear your rig is
doing well. yea, this place has been interesting, but I look at it this way...I read
50% of it for the humor. Nuke at least 30%, and hope there is some good info in the
rest. lol.

Yup, I got thick skin! But what defines an old timer?

This same thing is going on all over usenet and even alot of the BBs
out there. I've been here for (I think) about three years (under two
different sigs)and I've noticed the change too.

One thing I've seen is that whenever a troll shows up there's always a
group of people here willing to take the bait, or think they can get
rid of them by *yelling* at them. It never works, they love that ----.
I've learned to ignore them and how to use my kill-file rather
efficiently.

That being said, the line between a troll and a newbie can be pretty
fine/vague, and it's a real shame when folks like yourself and Jerry
bail and leave the newbies at the mercy of the *know it alls* that
think they're Gods gift to jeepin. I've said it before here that maybe
we need to establish a certain newsgroup *ettiquette* (sp?) and an FAQ
area where this could be explained or refer newbies to when they come
in here. The Harley group rec.motorcycles.harley has this set-up and
it seems to work rather well, and it seems to preserve some sense of
comeraderie among the online group members.

You're right Pete, the group has changed, and it will change for the
better again. I hardly ever post here anymore (compared to when I
first came here) because there doesn't seem to be too many discussions
that I want to get involved in. Maybe that will change. I get much
more information from other boards/forums like Nathans than I get from
here.

OK...now lets all get into a circle for a great big group hug! I can
feel the love in the room, can't you?

in all fairness though, the harley group really isnt comparable to any other
groups ive seen. its the long timers that are _trying_ to get the "-------"
moniker over there as if its "good" to be a jerk. i think one of the things
that makes jeeping so great is the friendly jeepers. i think the last thing
we need is the majority of the active posters purposefully trying to be the
biggest ------- in hopes that the ------- god will bestow the moniker on
them.

i also disagree with trying to form a "governing" FAQ. the whole idea
behind usenet is that it is self-policing. if people want moderation, i
think they should visit moderated boards. trying to moderate an unmoderated
group is ultimately pointless because until certain lines are crossed there
is no way to police the group anyway.

The plain and simple truth of the matter is that there will always be
assholes and there will always be filters to deal with them. We don't need
moderators to tell us to ignore assholes and apply the filter - just self
discipline. Of course, I've fed the trolls in the past as much as anyone,
but no more... well, virtually no more !

I think a group FAQ is a great idea. Not for the purpose of governing
behavior, but introducing people to what the group is about (Jeeps &
jeeping, obviously), and answering some of the more basic crap (how many
times will someone here explain the difference between a TJ & ZJ).
Aren't/wasn't there a good FAQ somewhere on the web already? I'm sure we
don't have to reinvent any wheels. (was that a pun?)

clear enough! since you used the harley group in your example and that the
harley group uses the faq as a governing guideline, i thought thats what you
were suggesting.

lol.....in all fairness that feature was only turned on at the request of
the members. :-)

agreed!

_all_ jeepers. thats the benefit (and down side) of usenet.

> How is the current ng different from 3, 4, 5 years

i dont think it will ever be what it was even 3 years ago. usenet as a
whole is changing. most people still dont know it even exists and more are
learning about it every day. with all the "good" people finding their way
into usenet, there are at least 2 "bad" people. i think this is why
participation is increasing in moderated forums and message boards. even my
small message board with only a handful of members is serving over 700 pages
per day.

anyway, i agree pretty much with everything youve said. keep going like
we're going and ignore the trolls as they happen through.

That's exactly the type of thing an FAQ could be used for. Questions like:
Whats the back spacing on TJ rims
What size tires fit on stock XYZ
How much lift do I need for a XX inch tire
etc etc

When someone asks one of those questions, give them the link to the FAQ.

Actually I'm surprised more people don't use Google to search for the info. I
usually have good luck with that search engine.

There was an FAQ set up for RAMJ&W at one time. It was maintained by someone of
the name "Wild Bill". I've since lost the bookmark though.
