Re: Almost did not make it home last night

I would try fuel filter first. Starting then running a short distance
then stopping is a classic sign of a clogged filter.

That would be my first start too.

Second, I would be wondering about the air filter on the gas tank vent.
If blocked, it can act like that. Quick test for that is to crack the
gas cap open. If the trouble stops change the filter.

Great follow up Mike. Changing the fuel filter and not solving the
problem then overlooking the air vent filter and moving on to other
areas could drive someone insane! I can see it now...poor guy replaces
EVERYTHING, fuel pump, plugs, ect...finally drops in a new engine and
still doesn't run, so he sells it to his neigbor for 100 bucks.
Neigbor changes vent filter on the spot and drives off, leaving a
crying and broken man that will never recover...=:{)

Yup, I was geting ready to go the route of changing out all sorts of stuff
till Mike set me straight on my evap canister problem a couple years back!
Saved me untold time and money with just a simple test!

Re: Almost did not make it home last night

All of the emissions stuff has been taken off of my motor so I know it
is not related to the canister. I just replaced the fuel tank vent hose
so I know it does not have a filter that could be clogged.

So where does your fuel tank now vent to?

Open air?

Re: Almost did not make it home last night

Yes, goes up to a junction by the filler hole that is under the gas cap.
(or are you talking about the return line from the carb straight to the
tank? That goes in near the gas gauge sender) There is also a smaller
tube on the drivers side of my tank that is connects two smaller outlets
of the tank. I have a poly tank so it may be different, or possibly
installed wrong by the previous owners.

Re: Almost did not make it home last night

Nope, that isn't the gas tank vent, that is the 'full tank' shut off
tube for the gas pump nozzle or anti-backflow tube.

On the poly tank, there are two vents in the top of it. These connect
together on the drivers side and are supposed to go to the charcoal
canister.

Where do they go now?

There is just a single hose connecting them together thus not venting
anywhere. I do not have a canister. I assume the gas cap has been
loose enuff to vent the tank for the last two years that the Jeep has
been set up this way. I wonder if the new fill tube and full tank shut
off tube that I just installed two weeks ago have changed the dynamics
of the tank. I really don't think this is the problem as it is still
idling rough, unless I have fouled the plugs to much by trying to limp
home.

I am going to try a new fuel filter tonight, and possibly a friends
PCM(I found out he always carries a spare PCM because of this exact
issue on his CJ7). Also I am going to take a look at the plugs to see
if they are fouled.

Just read that again.

Yup, the new filler hose is 99% the problem. The old one leaked eh?
