Re: 81 CJ5 Steering Gear
Don't know if anybody else responded but here's mine. Give a call to any
of the local parts stores in your town and they should be able to easily give you a remanufactured power steering gearbox for your CJ for about $180. That's what O'Reilly's quoted to me. Oddly enough, the manual steering gearbox cost about $20 more. If you're interested in something fancier, check out an AGR box (http://www.agrsteering.com/). Just for those checking, I don't work for AGR and say caveat emptor. I'm in the process of doing a power steering conversion myself and think I've brought it up two or three times today :) Still waiting to hear some opinions on the AGR box since it's about $370. Sure sounds nice, though. If you're interested (heck, even if you're not), highly recommend you get your hands on a catalog from 4WD Hardware (www.4wd.com). They've got a great selection of parts and accessories for Jeeps. (No, I don't work for them either:) P.S. Check the other steering threads to see if you can get more tips there. o_o_o_o Best Regards, /| ,[_____], Jim, WP3JQ |ŻŻŻL --O|||||||O- ()_)Ż()_) ŻŻŻŻŻ )_) EM60qk 30.447439N 086.628959W "Ghostbuster" <brad2004@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message news:ULvic.21390$6d2.19952@newssvr22.news.prodigy. com... > I cant find this thread? Re: 81 CJ5 Steering Gear
Thanks for the info, I think I just really need to know if my current
steering gear box is correct or not. I dont want to spend $180 to find out that my box is fine. My steering will not come back to center when I turn. And the steering wheel turns 4 times from far left to far right. Is this the norm for a CJ5 with power steering? Re: 81 CJ5 Steering Gear
If you don't have a slop of a couple of inches at the steering
wheel, before the tires begin to move than the box is not your problem. Not having the steering wheel return to forward after a turn is largely an alignment problem, mostly in the caster angle, which is usually destroyed with any lift.
