Ratty-Lookin' old carpet Gotta GO ! Bare Naked TJ Asks
 

Hey People !

My ride is '97 TJ Sahara Ragtop.
Still looks OK, but,... That carpet is just TOO
ratty looking anymore. I'd like to try just yanking it.
No carpet at all fits my idea of a jeep better anyway.

I was just about to do it today in prep for a
nice couple of hours detailing it when I decided
to check to manual. It gave me a big: DON"T DO THAT.
Reason; high floor pan temps could burn riders.

I wanta ask the group: Is that true ? Should I care
or is this a CYA from the Jeep Legal Dept. ?
(I sure don't wanna melt my K-Swiss ! - <grin> )

Pull it. I havent had carpet in my 98, since...well, since 98. Just the husky
liners to catch the worst of the muck off of my boots.

I don't know if it is true that you will burn anybody, but I was very
uncomfortable driving barefoot, or with sandles on. I need to use heavy
rubber floor mats to be comfortable driving my CJ.

I pulled the carpet out of my '98 and my '01. It gets warm around the hump
just under the shifter, but I haven't noticed it being unbearable. My '01
ran without carpet for quite a while, but I have it Rhinolined now. It
still gets warm, but not as hot as the bare metal.

I'd pull them and get some think rubber floor mats.

I ran without carpets in my '01 TJ for close to a year before I finally
got around to putting in herculiner. If it got warm down there, I never
noticed it. Any heat emanating from the floorboards would probably be
an improvement in the winter considering the marginal heater used in
this rig.

I ran without carpets in my '01 TJ for close to a year before I finally
got around to putting in herculiner. If it got warm down there, I never
noticed it. Any heat emanating from the floorboards would probably be
an improvement in the winter considering the marginal heater used in
this rig.

have been plenty of days when that didn't really matter since it was

I wanted to get it filthy. The Jeep is already filthy and needs a new
windshield so the truck will stay in the driveway (unless I need it)
until everything dries out.

Of course, we could still get nailed in March and possibly into April so
I haven't put the shovel away yet.

I run 30x9.50R15LT Goodyear MT/R on the TJ, which have been on it since
new (minus 2700 miles on the alcan). I'd like a little taller tire but
at the time I just didn't want to open that can of worms on a new
vehicle. What I would *like* to do when I upgrade, is install a custom
built D44 rear axle with the sensors for my ABS, regear to 4.11, add a
Tera 2T or OME lift, and install LT235/85R16 MT/Rs on 16" rims. That
will give me about a 32x9.25. A detroit electrac would be nice too.

That's some big bucks and it would go a long way towards my airplane
project so I have to decide if it is worth it or not. I figure I can
get through at least one more winter before I have to make a decision
one way or the other. Barring any unforseen changes to my driving
routine my current tires won't be worn out at that point but I like to
have a little bit of margin in the winter.
