Rattle in my catalytic converter
 
My cat converter is rattlin' something fierce at around 1200-1500 RPM. Any fix
for this or am I looking at a new one? If so, what should I get (factory or
aftermarket) and what do they cost roughly?

Make sure it's not the heat shield around the cat. A real long hose clamp
can secure it long enough to find out.

If it is internal your better replacing it quickly before it barfs into
the muffler and you get even more rattles.

Used to say aftermarket, but for the most part OEM/Factory parts are
better. All depends.

The cat in my wifes G.C rattled for almost 2 years, I took it out and
put in a homemade straight pipe. The only problem is the check engine
light is always on due to no signal from the downstream o2 sensor. My
old YJ just up and failed one day on the way to work, the catalyst
jammed in the outlet nozzle and the best I could do was 70 or 80 km/h.
A 5/8" hole drilled upstream of the cat allowed me to get it to a
muffler shop....it's amazing how much gas can exhaust out such a
little hole.

Check with your Stealership if there's any guarantee on it. Here in
California SMOG stuff is covered out to about eight thousand miles.
