Quick question about YJ 4 banger...

The valve cover is leaking on wife's YJ. Gasket or sealant?

Re: Quick question about YJ 4 banger...

I use Permatex Blue Silicone Gasket Maker, being very careful to
completely wipe clean and dry with Denatured Alcohol, running about
quarter inch bead around the cover, and practicing many time to drop the
cover perfectly down on the head. Any squishing around and you've wasted
your time.

Gasket. Should only set you back about $10.

Might want to inspect the cover once it's off to make sure it isn't
cracked anywhere. Replacement covers are relatively cheap unless you
opt for the polished chrome or Aluminum look.

O.K. That's one vote for gasket, one for sealant. Before I remove the
dang thing out at my place in the sticks, I'll need a tie breaker.

Buy both before you begin the job, and return the unused materials after you
are done. Not much of a tie breaker is it? ;o)

Not too bad. I have all kinds of good sealant, and I try to avoid
AutoBone® when I can.

OK, put the gasket on, then when you accidentally torque the bolts a
little too tight and spit and squeeze out gasket from under the bolts,
then you have the silicone.

gasket maker is about $3/tube where a gasket is considerably more moola and

Why not leave it up to your fav supplier and see if the gasket is actually
in stock. Depending on how much of a rush you're in, the gasket maker may be
your tie breaker.

Re: Quick question about YJ 4 banger...

Why not leave it up to your fav supplier and see if the gasket is actually
in stock. Depending on how much of a rush you're in, the gasket maker may be

How true!

Thanks all!

I don't have a TCM for it yet and needed to do something about it pretty
soon. Looks like I will be installing her Tuffy trunk this weekend
instead.

Time for a new thread about the tank...
