Question - replacing Jeep Fuel Injectors
 

Hello everyone -

1989, Jeep Cherokee - 6cyl / 4.0L - Fuel Injected
200,000 mi on jeep - has had rebuilt engines put in and etc during life
of Jeep

Question - Are all Fuel Injectors basically the same ? I need to
replace my # 3 injector ( it is cracked and leaking badly at the head /
wires - the seals are otherwise brand new at the fuel rail and intake
port ). My neighbor fixes cars for spare cash, and he has a bunch of
used spare injectors laying around and gave me one that looks very
similar to my standard equipment ones. We have a bit of a language
barrier though (he's a native Spanish speaker), and I'm not certain if
the injector he gave me will work with my Jeep ? Are all injectors the
same, or are they calibrated to work with each individual make & model
of car because of on board fuel control computers ?

If I could just use the one he gave me, that would be great and save me
$$$ for a new aftermarket one. Does anybody have any info on this
subject ?

No they are calibrated for the cylinder size for one.

There are some that will cross over, but not many.

But if you had no money, and if you couldn't communicate that well with the
only mechanic you knew, and if the alternative was to spray gasoline all
over the engine compartment, what would you recommend?

Don't these things have numbers on them, that you could compare? There is
always the plug-it-in-and-see-what-happens school of thought too.

Thanks for the info Mike - thats what I thought. You learn something
new everyday, and fuel injection is one of those subjects that I don't
know that much about. So I guess I'm off to the parts store for the
