Power transmission switch?
 
Guys, on my XJ, I have one switch on the right side of steering wheel, near
the rear wiper switch. It's written ''trans -power and -comfort. What is
going on when I switch this on a "power"? I usually tow my boat behind and I
would like to know if there is some improvement with switch in "power"
position? Thanks.

That switch probably changes the shift points..."power" will make shifts at
higher RPM's to get better performance or under load. That's an educated guess
on my part.

I think same. One time, I tried under load (boat on a trailer) and found
nothing different. I'll try again.

on my 90 xj it delays upshifts untill around 3000 rpms and wont allow the
torque converter to lock until about 50 mph. also it lowers the mpg by
quite a bit. however when i tow my trailer it makes a big difference in the
hills.

It may not allow overdrive, here in Kalifornia, it's definitely not
needed as our maximum tow speed is fifty five miles per hour.

The Power position will carry the current gear to a higher engine speed
before shifting, and allow downshifting earlier. The Economy or Comfort
position will allow early shifts to conserve fuel, and it will delay
downshifts.

While dragging your boat, you will probably like the Power setting best. You
should also use a setting that will defeat the overdrive function if you get
to a hill. Basically, if the trans is constantly shifting into and out of
overdrive, then you should set the selector to prevent overdrive from being
selected while the conditions exist that cause the shifting to occur.

Most automatic transmissions today are 3 speed, with an overdrive 4th. Under
load and climbing a hill, the trans will shift back and forth from 4th to
3rd, and this is generally not a good thing. If the downshift and subsequent
upshift is only going to happen once or twice, then allow the transmission
to make the calls, but if you are going up a long hill and the downshift
comes, then the upshift and then the downshift again, lock the trans in the
downshift gear until the conditions go away that cause the transmission to
search for the right gear.

Thanks Jeff, one more thing... This my first Jeep and first car with 1st and
2nd gear together on same position on shifting lever. What do you suggest
about going a long downhill and I still want to use both - 1st and 2nd gear.
I'm afraid to shift manually down from 3rd one. Seems to me like
transmission will shift directly to 1st gear? On my previous car, both lower
gears were separated.

The transmission is smart enought to not shift into a gear that will cause
it to explode. Pay attention to the upshift points. If the shift from second
to third can be forced to happen (full throttle accelleration) at say 40
mph, then any time you are going below 40 mph, you can shift into 2nd to
control your downhill speed.

What happens with the 1/2 position is the truck starts out in 1st, and is
limited to 2nd on the upshift.
