Noise equals damage. I would get a friend to just take the slop out
of the steering wheel by bouncing back and forth, while you lie under the front end looks for what may be about to fall off. Maybe take it to be lubed and casually walk around under it looking for something loose, probably be giving off steel shavings in the form of rust stains.
