Ping: DougW (OT Computer Stuff)

Hey Doug, you're in the 'puter field aren't you?

I have some high end server and storage equipment (cisco, extreme, qualstar)
that I know nothing about and have been asked to sell.

I have the bill of sale for most of the equipment but I doubt the 3 yr old
"Extreme Alpine Mid-Range High-Speed Backbone System" will fetch anywhere
near the $40K new price.

Do you know of any websites (besides eBay) that sells used equipment so I
can get a rough idea of what this stuff is worth?

You might say that. :)

I'm also running a museum.

eBay is about the only thing out there that usually has price information
but you could ask for a few quotes on equipment. Depreciation rate for
computer stuff is about 20%-33%/year or your $40k is now about $20k

http://www.genesisglobalinc.com/
(request a quote on-line)
http://www.bizinetworks.com
(you have to call for a quotes but they also buy used equipment)

http://www.usedrouter.com
has prices but mostly Cisco

Third party reseller http://www.andovercg.com/ (no experience with them)
But you know any third party sales is like taking a car to a used car lot.
Your not going to get the $ from a personal sale.

There is no one bellybutton for price data, mebby http://pricewatch.com ?

The stuff we buy comes from http://gsaadvantage.gov and the used bits go to
DRMO (government auction and recycling yard)

Hope some of this helps.

Lot's of progress, it's facing the garage now instead of the street. I've
been inundated with other "projects" such as building my shed and... oh,
that's it. I've been lazy/saving money for other stuff and busy finding
excuses. The chilly weather has prompted my to get going on it soon though.
I have to get it aligned so I can resolve a castor issue and put the
interior back in.

Some of the blame lays with this newsgroup. There should be more people like
you shaming me into getting this project completed. Instead they go on with
their fulfilled lives with no regard for my propensity to procrastinate.

My insurance company is however thrilled my progress. It sits in the
driveway with premiums paid up and little to no risk of accident or injury.

eBay has pretty much tanked the used hardware business. There are a
few specialty resellers that will take old or modestly old equipment
and sell it used with a modest warranty and spare parts. Plus access
to software upgrades, etc.

They tend to offer less for used equipment than you can get on eBay.
Worse, many of the better used equipment resellers now are on eBay
and make it tougher for unknown individuals to sell there. My current
and last company will allow us to buy on eBay, but are somewhat
picky about who we do business with there, since you never know what
sort of shape used equipment is in.... unless you know the business
and that they are prepared to stand behind the more expensive stuff.
Overstock.com is becoming in that direction. Sunstar is one place.
Few folks would risk buying a big tape library due to the possibility
of getting a "Friday machine" used unless they get it from a service
or parts providing used equipment dealer. Ciscos and Extreme Networks
are more eBay goods.

eBay has certainly had an impact on many markets; sports memorabilia,
clothing consignments, collectables... you can't buy that stuff locally
anymore. Fortunately there are still a number of lingerie stores around for
those last minute Valentines Day gifts.

You're right about the really big ticket items on eBay. I have a Qualstar
TLS 4480 (80)Tape Library for sale as well. Invoice on it was $36,250 +
$10,000 for tapes (which I hope to format and include). I can't see too many
people willing to click "buy it now" for this item. Shipping from Canada
could get ugly too at 1000 lbs.

I have some small Cisco items (PIX 515UR, Catalyst 2924 MXL) that will
easily sell on eBay but I'm wondering if I should part out the Extreme 3808.
Your opinion?

No, even the mice find it too cramped in my garage;

I had to buy thin wall sockets and stubby wrenches to save room.
I sanded two coats of paint off the walls to make it wider.
I keep my 1/2" extensions in the kitchen cutlery drawer between the forks
and spoons.
I keep bundles of steel wool in my underwear drawer (big mistake).
I switched from .030" to .025" mig wire for more elbow room.
I tossed my c-clamps and use micrometers for measuring and clamping.
I cut a fifty foot "S" shaped groove in the floor to store my extension
cord.
I reverse the polarity on my elec. lawnmower to double as a shop vac.
I modified my extension ladder for storage, I now have 24 one foot ladders.

On the plus side, with so much clutter it only takes 7 seconds and a wooden
match to heat up the garage.

We've picked up a few Extremes here and there as non-critical lab
junk, where I suspect they'll corrode until they become monitor
props or go back to eBay. Hey, I'll be darned, we got one of
those shin gashers.

That one is big enough it may be worth checking out some of the
used specialty resellers. A quick search for such in your area
may work, as I suspect that the shipping to Canvas or Hula would
tank your money. Parts on eBay might do better even with the
shipping hassles.
