pcv breather smoking

when my car is running, usually after it gets hot, the pcv breather
starts blowing white smoke. what is causing this?
internet tells me the piston rings are bad and combustion is occuring
where it should not. are there any other possibilities? (preferably
with an easier fix). can it cause further damage to the engine by
running it as this is happening? should i unplug it? is it bad for
this smoke to get back to the air filter and down the carb?

any help is appreciated. thanks

You are still implying to me that the plumbing to the gas tank is messed
up.....

Did you figure out 'why' you keep running out of gas?

Could the lines running back there have gotten mixed up?

One reason I ask this is because one (well two that go into one) of the
lines leading to the gas tank is it's air vent, or charcoal canister.
If this is not working or plumbed correctly, you will get 'blowby' or
smoke and oil spitting back into the air filter.

If you are getting oil into the air filter as well as smoke, please
confirm this and I will walk you through one set of tests.

First off you need to pull out the front PCV valve and confirm it
rattles freely. If not, replace it, it is the likely cause if bad.

If just smoke, then maybe it is time to change the air filter on the gas
tank vent. When this $2.00 filter blocks up from mud or dust, it puts a
vacuum on the gas tank which 'will' act like the engine runs out of gas.
You can be driving along and then it starves for gas and bogs, then it
stalls and acts like there is no gas. A quick test for a blocked filter
is to open the gas cap when it 'runs out of gas'. If you get a hiss and
it runs again, the filter is more than dirty, it is blocked.

I have had to come home from the mud pits with the gas cap open several
times.

The filter, sometimes called an evaporation system or emissions filter,
is on the bottom of the charcoal canister and is a 'real' pain in the
butt to change the first time. I needed a hammer and chisel to get my
filter out of the canister and many squirts of penetrating oil on the
clamp. Actually I think I gave up on the clamp and just unbolted it
from the firewall. Once out, the new one just tucks in.

This filter is supposed to be changed the same time as the spark plugs.

i feel like a real jackass saying this but it might of just been out
of gas the whole time. i put a gallon in it today and its been
running fine. i think when i did this before i just looked past the
fact that it would take time to pump the new gas up the fuel line, so
when i cranked and nothing happened i just assumed it was still not
working. ha, anyways, i still cant believe that was the problem and
still have a nasty feeling its gonna happen again, but until then....

i looked closer at the pcv going from the breather to the air filter
but didnt see any oil, whether car was running or not. i also noticed
a little white or maybe grey smoke from the exhuast. i believe it
stopped but might be relevant. i am not sure what you mean by
rattling the front of the pcv valve. are we talking about the same
hose as the breather or a different one, if so where, and even if you
do mean the same one, where should it rattle? i also am not sure
where the gas tank vent is either, so i have not yet checked the
filter. ive been looking for a diagram to find it but havent had any
luck yet.

The PCV valve is stuck in the top front of the valve cover. It has a
tube running to the back of the carb along side the valve cover. You
pull this valve out of the top of the valve cover and shake it.

The hose running from the back top of the valve cover is the air
'intake' to the engine, that is why it has a little filter in there.
Some white smoke coming out of this at certain times is normal, the PCV
valve will suck most of these fumes back into the base of the carb if
they don't go in the top, but the PCV does 'not' suck all the time.

The charcoal canister is 'Waaaayyyy' down under the washer bottle at the
bottom of the inside fender.

I moved mine up under my brake booster to keep it out of the mud...
