Is the pastic gas tank shield on an XJ needed?

I just replaced my '92 Cherokee's fuel tank due to pin hole leaks. I
will soon be putting a skid under it, and am wondering if there is a
reason to keep the plastic shield that is strapped to the fuel tank, and
is a main cause of the rust leading to leaks. Is it needed to protect
the tank from the straps that hold up the tank, or can I ditch it
without a problem?

Stephen.

it's there to prevent you from owning a pinto bomb should you get rear ended
