OT: Burping a radiator?

Just did the blower motor swap in my CJ7, and you have to drain parts of
the radiator and unhook heater hoses, it says don't forget to burp the
radiator when finished. I would imagine that means getting all the air out,
but how does one do that?

Hook it up, start the motor, stop the motor, fill up the radiator again.
wash, rinse, repeat. You probably will have to check it one more time
after the engine warms up then cools down.

For the OP: If you don't get all the air out then the water/coolant won't
circulate and the temp will rise very high. If you've burped it once and
the temp stays normal then it's fine.

Wouldn't all the air in the system eventually work it's way out thru the
overflow system?

For small amounts of air on a system with an overflow bottle, yes.

Problem is large amounts of air from partially draining the block
or pulling the heater core can cause an airlock in some motors and
the overflow system only works for a small amount of coolant at a
time. It's faster and safer to top off the radiator then run the
engine a few seconds to burp out the air.

Re: Burping a radiator?

No.

Some of the hoses run up high and can get air locked. Especially the
long run heater hose on the CJ7s.
