Ok... So I Lost a Front brake pad?? WTF???
All right, on our weekend run we came out to town for beer and food and
my brakes felt strange with a pulsing pedal. I stopped and checked the fluid, it was ok so I drove some more on the bush road and the pedal seemed normal again. On the way back from town I have to slow down for a speed zone and no freaking brake pedal, right to the floor. I pumped them and got 'some' brake pedal with the loudest screech you ever want to hear. So I use the gears and pull over and get under for a look. Well.... I am looking and looking and for the life of me can't see an inside brake pad???? So I 'finally' get the wheel off on the 3rd tire wrench, broke the first two on that one last lug nut.. and yup, sure as ---- there isn't an inside pad. The caliper piston is directly on the rotor! I found about an inch of one end of the metal backing pad in there on the top side. That sure was a first for me! A couple in a Cherokee stopped and took me to their place to try and get one from his parts Cherokee, but we didn't have the right wrench so he drove me an hour each way to a parts store that was still open. He has a CJ5 and just sold his CJ7 too. Nice gent, didn't even want gas money. So I stuck one shoe in and was on my way. Anyone ever heard of a pad disintegrating on a Cherokee?? Yup, I now have 6 pads just for that reason, one glued one on the other side separated a while ago and I have the 3 left over riveted pads in the garage. Woah.... Hmmm The ones on the drivers side are, well one still is a glued pad. The one that fell apart or disappeared on the passenger side is a riveted pad. The shop that safety certed it did a brake pad and one new rotor job on the passenger side for the rotor. Sounds like he only did half a job or used left over parts.... Oh well, no real big deal, he was inexpensive and the pad were new and have even side to side wear. Mike |

Hi Mike,
Yup, you can feel it in the pedal when they break loose from the rivets and ball up and push the pedal back up at you, or as you said one pulse. You misunderstand! The whole freaking pad was gone, metal backing part, except for an inch and a half at one end, too! My caliper piston was pushing on the rotor directly.... No no no guys....
The metal backing plate was gone too!!!!! The caliper piston was pushing directly on the rotor! Here is a photo that anyone can view, I flipped the broken pad to show the liner piece still on one rivet. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4290636987 Mike "L.W.(ßill) ------ III" wrote: > > Hi Mike, > Yup, you can feel it in the pedal when they break loose from the > rivets and ball up and push the pedal back up at you, or as you said one > pulse. > God Bless America, ßill O|||||||O > mailto:-------------------- http://www.----------.com/ > > Mike Romain wrote: > > > > All right, on our weekend run we came out to town for beer and food and > > my brakes felt strange with a pulsing pedal.
