oil pressure on my TJ
Last week my 97 TJsport oil pressure gauge showed a lil ove 40psi regularly
and just a couple of days ago it dropped to about 20 and it now varys with rpm. It never did this before, has anybody ever seen this or is it somthing worse that im in for? TJ with 106k miles, gonna change oil today(first chance ive had since gauge prob) and make sure its not somthing in the filter clogging or such. Just changed a lil over 1k agao. Hope it clears up! Re: oil pressure on my TJ
check the oil levels first, but I bet its your oil pressure sending unit going bad.
My 98 is on its 4th one already. Re: oil pressure on my TJ
Steve,
I agree with Del's reply, to try the sending unit. I had to replace mine a few months ago. The symptoms were a lot like you are describing. Mine would drop so low I would get a beep and a check engine light, but just for a second. I got mine form AutoZone. I think it was about $35. Be careful, They call it a pressure switch. That almost fooled me into not going to get it from them. But it turned out to be a sending unit. I've heard of these going bad many times. Good luck. It's normal for the pressure to follow RPM when the engine is warm - on a hot day my well broken in 4.0 (160k miles) has a hot idle (800 RPM) of 25 PSI or so, running 45-50 at highways speeds (2200 RPM or so). After sitting for any length of time, it will start out on the 75 PSI level then drop. When that level shifted down by at least 10PIS across the range I dropped the pan and changed the pump AFTER confirming the pressure readout with a mechanical guage. It's a lot more common for the sender to fail than for a pump to suddenly go bad on you. -- Will Honea <whonea@codenet.net> |

spec is 10 psi+ at idle
bad sending unit????
