Oil Pressure Gauge Spiked at 80psi

Oil gauge on my 1999 XJ is sitting at 80psi when the engine is idling,
cruising, or even if the engine is off and the key is just turned one
click. Gauge used to work fine with about 30-35 psi at idle and 40psi
cruising. Fresh durablend oil as always.

Could it be possible that the oil pressure REALLY IS at 80 psi for some
reason? How can I check it? If its just the pressure sensor, how hard
is it to replace?

Thanks!!!

It is likely the sensor has gone bad or the wire has just fallen off it
and is hitting on something. I 'think' that a short on the wire will
pin the gauge at 80 so you might want to follow the wire along for a
while. Again I 'think' the wire is purple.

The sensor is easy to change. It just unscrews. If there is oil
seeping out the top it is dead for sure, but to test you can pull the
wire off and see what the gauge does. Then ground the wire and see what
the gauge does.

How can you have 80 PSI with the motor off?

Gauge or sensor malfunction. It could also be a loose
wire, connector or ground. Good luck.

Put the sensors wire back on.

If it's the I6 your sensor is located on the oil filter block.
