V-E Day is still a state holiday in Rhode Island:

Yeah.. Thanks to my great uncles and my father in law ( He fought in 3 wars,
WWII - He was a POW and won the Bronze Star , Korea, and Vietnam).. My
grandfather wasn't allowed to go and fight.. The government said he was too
important to go.. He tried to volunteer 3 times and all 3 times he was
denied.. He worked at Union Carbide.. They made plastics for the war...
