new to Jeeps what's the difference between YJ CJ Sahara etc.
 

I'm looking at an 88 Sahara with 4.2L, when buying aftermarket parts
what designation should I use? What's the difference between the CJ-5's
7's YJ's?

What's the difference between the Sahara and other Wranglers, is it a
entry level base model or an upgrade package like "GT" usually is on cars?

Also what are the better sights for aftermarket parts for Jeeps?

CJ, YJ, TJ are each different productin runs of the open top Jeeps. The XJ,
WJ, MJ, etc. are various productin runs of Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, and
other closed top models.

Your YJ is an early production, first year, run of the YJ. Sahara is a trim
level that gives color keyed fender flares and upgraded seats, and other
items along this line (it is the upgrade, like the GT in your question). The
running gear of the Sahara is the same as the other trim levels available.
Your rear differential can be either a D35 or a D44 (Dana 35 or 44),
depending upon the options the original purchaser ordered or accepted off
the lot. The D44 is the stronger of the two, and it looks like an apple
laying on its side.

Well, yeah. The CJ and YJ use leaf spring suspensions, the TJ uses coil
springs. The YJ uses either a carburated or fuel injected motor, depending
upon the year of production, the CJs use carbs and the TJ uses fuel
injection. The carburated motor is 4.2L (258 ci), the injected motor is 4.0L
(232 ci). Some CJs (mine for one) and early YJs will have injection, but the
owner installed it himself, or had a shop install it. All 4 cyl YJs have
injection, the previous pertains to the 6 only.

Hang around here and you will eventually learn more that you ever dreampt
of.

BTW
It you intend to do any offroading, you will need to get tow hooks and a
strap, but do not get a strap with metal hooks on the ends, these are very
dangerous in the event the anchor point breaks off. The strap will be under
intense strain when this happens, and the hooks become lethal projectiles.
There is a host of other stuff you will need too, but way to much to list up
on the first day.

Offroading ability has diminshed over the years while highway
performance and safety features have been improved.

CJs: Pre-1985. Best off road performance, least suitable for highway
use and as a daily driver.

YJs: 1986-1996. Middling off road performance, some better safety
and handling on the road.

TJs: 1997-Present. Primarily designed with on-pavement use in mind.
Poorest off-road performance.


(Note that the above comments refer to vehicles in stock condition.
With substantial work, it's possible to take any vehicle and convert
it to be more or less off-road worthy.)

CJ = Civilian Jeep

YJ = Yuppie Jeep

TJ = Trendy Jeep

(Running and ducking for cover while pulling on the fire proof long
johns...)
