New Cherokee coming out?

I had a chance to chew the rag with the Jeep people at the Minnesota
State Fair, and one of the guys mentioned that Jeep was coming out with
a new vehicle named the Cherokee. This will be a big vehicle with a 3rd
seat, obviously designed to compete with the Ford Expedition. Anyone
know anything about this. It seems Jeep is becoming more and more like
any other SUV maker.

Also, I asked if there would ever be a Liberty with full
instrumentation. The sales guy had to look to see that the Liberty on
display didn't have a voltmeter and oil gauge. This seems to be a trend
in smaller SUVs nowdays. I also pointed out that the Liberty was really
too small to sleep in, and he didn't have much to say.

Re: New Cherokee coming out?

Did you ask him about putting the 2" back into the suspension? How about
getting rid of the IFS, or at least, offering a solid axle option? Ask him
about offering a 4.0 inline 6 with good low end torque instead of the v6.

Last rumors on the Grand I can recall was that there may be
an optional model with the third seat, that it seems to still
have a solid rear axle, and is supposed to share stuff with
the Merc ML series and may or may not have ride height control
to compete with the Touareg.

Grand Wagoneer? Some mag had rumors the name might be resurrected
for a bigger than GC SUV to compete with the Expedition, etc. sizes.

Re: New Cherokee coming out?

The new {Grand} Cherokee will come in 2 sizes. A shortwheel base, called the
Cherokee and the long wheelbase called the Grand Cherokee. The same way that
Chrysler's minivans are designated. The Grand Cherokee will have the 3rd seat
standard on both the Laredo and Limited versions. A low end Sport model (late
availability) will not have it available. See the spy photos of the short
wheelbase version here.

Re: New Cherokee coming out?

What jeep really needs is a long, 4 door wrangler.
In the world market for 4x4's 'jeep' is a generic term
for a 4x4, but actual Jeeps are a minor player.
Toyota Landcruiser Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi montero/pajero are
the preferred, durable machines.

Here in Haiti you cannot even buy a wrangler from the Jeep dealer.
They sell Liberty and Grand. The Toyota Land Cruiser II is the
best utility car you can buy. Land Rover is good too, but expensive.

That Wrangler Safari that daimler/chrysler showed a few years back
is what they should do for the real market for real off road cars.

They should have keptthe xj in production as a utility car alongside
the civilianized Liberty.
