need help buying used 99 - 01 XJ

Okay, I am looking for a 99 -01 XJ w/ 4.0L and am wondering what the
different 4wd systems are on the vehicles and also which options for axles
that came with them. I'd like to try and get something a little beefier in
case I want to throw a couple inch lift in it.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

For the XJ you had Command-Trac and Selec-Trac options for the transfer
case. The Selec-Trac is the better (and slightly stronger) option.

As for axle options, fronts are Dana 30 and the rear has the Dana 35 or
Chrysler 8.25. From what I've read the 8.25 is very similar to the Dana
44 so that your best bet. The Dana 44 was not a option for the years in
question as far as I know.

With or without your planned lift I would look for a XJ with the
Up-Country option as you get tow hooks, skid plates for the front
suspension, transfer case and fuel tank plus Trak-loc for the rear. It
also includes heavy duty cooling and a trans cooler.

Re: need help buying used 99 - 01 XJ

I have found a 2000 that has the corporate 8.25 rear and Select-Trac fwd.
What is the difference between Selec-trac and Command -Trac?? On the option
sheet it says "DHP Select-Trac Full Time 4WD System". It only has 43000km
and looks to be in really good shape. Of course I've only seen it at night
in the dealer lot. It's selling for $17,995CDN. I plan on returning
tomorrow and checking it out in the daylight. It seems to sit quite low and
has the 225/75 R15 tires. I think I'd like to bump it up a bit because it
looks like a car beside my CJ with 33's. If anyone can assist me with any
specifics I should look for with these models, and whether this is a fair
price or not, it would be greatly appreciated.

Selec-Trac is a "full-time" option that allows you to run the Jeep on
all types of surfaces, dry or wet without damage. Command-Trac is for
off-road use only on loose surfaces, dirt etc. I can't say if there is
a real long term difference on reliability though....

The 225/75-15's were standard fare for the XJ. I have 30X9.5's on my XJ
with Up-Country and they rubbed at full lock. A spacer on the steering
stops put a end to that. The Up-Country option added one inch of lift
but that doesn't really matter if you plan on lifting it anyway. To run
31" tires you need at least a 3" lift regardless of having Up-Country or
not.

Can't say if the price is fair for you in Canada, last time I checked
$17,995CDN was about $38.77 in US dollars :)
